Language tags

As a first step towards a multilingual site, we've rolled out the ability to tag content with a language. Users will be able to filter content by language and, eventually, set preferences for what language(s) they see as they browse the site. This will be independent from the UI language.

Please let me know if you'd like a language added to the list.

languages to be added

Are criteria laid down for addition? The European picture is quite a bit complicated, as is the situation in Africa and Asia.

additions...

I'm not sure what you mean... like would we have both "French" and "Quebecoise"?

I think we'd want large enought groupings so that there would be a useful amount of content in each tag...

Err...

...I'm probably missing something obvious, but where do I see/set these tags in question?

here ?

e.g. in http://crossroads.world66.com/blog/jani/london_meets_the_matrix > edit > language* ....as far I have understood correctly ;-)

Where...

When you create a new blog entry, you should see under "Categories" pull-down options for Language and License... lemme know if you're not seeing em!

additions...

OK, not that many languages for the beginning Wink. We'd rather go with 5-8 major languages and eventually expand the choice in a second moment? Here is a common draft, from that perspective, proposed by Reen and Giorgio.

DeutschEnglishEspañolFrançaisItalianoPortuguêsPусский (Russian)Svenska

looks good...

That looks like a great starting point... thanks for putting some thought into this!

I'll update the taxonomy...

Why not the same languages

Why not the same languages as supported by Wikitravel?  And the selection really should default to the one specified by the user on their profile (which, in turn, can default to English, but should be asked when creating an account).

Yes and yes

I think the intention is to have all the Wikitravel languages supported, possibly some others, and indeed to have the configured user language be the default.

Yes + some others =

That would make our proposition look like:

English DeutschEspañolEsperantoFrançaisItalianoNederlandsPolskiPortuguêsRomânăPусский (Russian)Svenska

Japanese

Don't forget 日本語!  As an additional bonus, building full multibyte encoding right from the start is much less painful that retrofitting it on afterwards.

Should be done

I think we got them all

Un PC, but

I'm going to put them slightly out of alphabetical order so that English is the default.

If we find that the majority of contributions are not in English at some point, we can change this. I just don't want to have a large amount of miss-filed content because users are overlooking this setting...

Defaults from profiles

It's absolutely our intention to let users set all sorts of useful defaults in their profiles-- including language and licensing...
