Moderation

So I'd like to propose a holistic plan for community management, using a combination of technological and social tools. This is pretty much what we have: *Automated spam detection [check] *Moderation of comments by unregistered users [check] *Moderation of new forum topics by unregistered users [rollout this week] *Flagging of any content for review [check] *Moderation & spam queue management by janitors [check] (you'll see a new Moderation block on the right column later today) *Levels of access: anonymous traveler, registered user, janitor, admin [check] *Wikitravel & World66 admins granted janitorial duties/privileges. [check] Additionally I'd like to suggest: *Any registered user who makes one or more real posts (ie not spam) get janitorial status and is thus able to ok content in the moderation queue. We have a small (but growing!) community, and I'd like to start with as open arms as possible... thoughts?

Global editing

I'm not sure when this happened or if it's intentional, but I currently seem to have to the ability to edit everything on the site, including Sapphire's blog entries and your forum post above? The only exception seems to be my own old blog entries, which still get me "Access denied"...

I noticed it...

a couple weeks back. Clicking around I think I'm even able to edit important things like disabling all comments and such. I wasn't about to click any of that stuff so I've stayed away from those buttons. It seems those options have been removed, but I might be clicking the wrong links.

Wings clipped

That was left over from my last attempt to get access for those sad lost posts that seem to be in some sort of access limbo... I made a few of you "SuperUsers!" you have now be demoted to mere mortals...

Ah, that sucks

I was just getting used to immortality, though I wasn't enjoying any of the benefits.... next time. {insert evil laughter}

Are you proposing...

giving every single user janitorial status? If so, what's the difference between janitor and admin? Can janitors edit other's comments and blogs, or only approve or deny things? If they "deny" something in the queue does it get deleted?

I think it'd be a little rash giving "Any registered user who makes one or more real posts" janitorial status. What if someone writes one seemingly good faith blog then when they get the janitorial status starts deleting relevant comments and content in the approval queue? Sure, the scenario is a little out there, but I'd rather you grant people who have shown many good faith additions the extra powers, rather than anyone who makes one, five, or even twenty non-spam comments, threads, or blogs.

Not quite

You'd be surprised how many people create accounts and don't do anything (useful) with them. We currently have over 150 registered users, but only half a dozen people have ever posted.

Janitorial status would pretty much mean the ability to approve content in the moderation and spam queues... which can, of course, be undone by another janitor or admin.

I'm fine with raising the bar to 5 or 10 posts, but it'll take us longer to get a critical mass of janitors patrolling the site.

There's only one admin (me) btw...

Ok, so I think I'm

Ok, so I think I'm understanding... basically, the proposal was to give people the same powers you've given me, Jani, Jonboy, and a few others, right?

Well, I've deleted spam comments and blogs before... If I accidentally (or purposely) deleted a kosher posting could you undo that?

I guess my concern boils down to this: Wikitravel is managed (in terms of spam and vandalism fighting, clean up, editing, and MoS perfecting) by a dedicated few. Then, occasionally, usually sometime after three months and hundreds or thousands of edits later someone gets the idea that a user understands the wiki process, Wikitravel policies, and consensus rules and someone says "User Y has been awesome. Y has edited over 30,000 articles, single handedly wrote 15,000 "star" articles and understands the principle of consensus and our policies. Let's give him a mop!"

There have been several nominations of administrators on Wikitravel that were outright denied because the community did not think the nominee was qualified or responsible enough to handle the "delete", "revert", "protect", and "block" buttons.

I think Extra should be similar. Ideally, someone would be familiar with WT policies and understand why Extra is extra and not Wikitravel. It should be known, beyond any doubt, that an Extra user would not abuse any additional powers.
