Suggestions for spending a week in Mauritius

I have promised my wife that we will spend our first wedding anniversary, which falls on Jan 10, 2008, in Mauritius. I know that it is exactly six months away, but there is no harm in asking for help much in advance, is there? Anyone can tell me what is the best way to spend a week to 9 days in Mauritius? Right now, I am wide open to suggestions and have no idea what to do there.

A long shot

...but Shoestring's written a great Mauritius article on the Japanese Wikitravel and might be able to give a few tips.

Why long shot?

Why is it a long shot? Because of communication problems? I checked out the Japanese article... and tried using Google's beta Japan-to-English feature, with hilarious results.

What type of anniversary do you want to spend in Mauritius?

Thank you for your message on my user page of Japanese wikitravel.

Well, the answer to your question is very much depending on what type of your stay you want the most in Mauritius. Do you want to choose quiet and isolated resort areas, or to stay more populated places with lots of play spots, restaurants, etc?

For your information, I listed some web pages which might be useful for you.

The latter

Thanks for the links! As for your question, we would really like to do a lot of things while in Mauritius, but we don't want to follow the crowd and do what everyone else is doing... Also, we don't want to do too many things that will make it look like we are rushing from one place to another.

Accommodation spot which I recommend

Well, when I visited Mauritius last September, I stayed Mont Choisy, a village at the northern part of the island (near Grand Baie).

It was relatively a calm, quiet and secluded place with a number of middle class resort hotels and some restaurants. It was indeed a nice place to relax, you know, just spending a time without any purposes.

Every hotel above middle class in Mauritius prepares proper facilities and service you need, from private beach to shops, restaurants, tennis courts, gears for marine sports, tour arrangements, clinics etc. So you can spend a time only in and around the hotel if you want.

And when you want go to some hot spot, all you have to do is just go to Grand Baie, approximately 15 to 20 minutes bus ride from there. I found the place at the hotel reservation counter in the airport, which turned out to be a good choice for me.

I recommend you to find an accommodation which is slightly away from the hot tourist spot (such as Grand Baie).
