View source option?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have an option to "view source" of other people's posts. It would smoothen the learning curve for people who do not know the markup. At least, that is how I learnt the Wiki markup, as I am not one of those who will RTFM.

On the flip side, it might take up real estate without much value in return.

attractive idea but...

why not create something like a new forum entry [workshops], which could contain subsections, e.g. [Wiki] > [how to learn the Wiki markup language?], then bring up the above mentioned option [view source user posts] to give some examples, tips and tricks to start this sub-forum with... The [workshops] section could be part of the Crossroads Community section, like we have the [Travelers Lounge] already there... section and subsections could be moderated by (a) fellow-traveler specialist(s). I think this could possibly work.

Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam. Or more adapted to actual CR developments: I think we should have a spell checker unit integrated in these edit boxes... badly missing! (I know it's already been requested before, this is just meant as a knot in the handkerchief :-)

FYI

Firefox 2 now does spell check in text areas... very handy!

please delete

Made a silly remark.... didn't see beyond the end of my nose, sorry :-(

Markup

I'm not sure if I'm clear on what markup you're concerned about. Users should be able to do everything using the WYSIWYG buttons. Wiki markup isn't currently supported (except interwiki links).

I agree that some Help areas in the forum are a good idea (I think there's already slots for "Help" and "How to"... interesting idea to extend it to more general support for Wikitravel and World66. I'm not sure how much we want to move off the Wikitravel discussion pages... thoughts?

... not sure how much we want to move off..

you wrote: "I'm not sure how much we want to move off the Wikitravel discussion pages.." Well, please keep in mind that World66 does not have (a) decent forum/discussion pages at all (all right, we have the Google based World66, General discussions, but these pages never offered the desired functionality... Google Groups simply is not an adequate community building instrument). CR also being "Crossroad" between World66 and Wikitravel, one could think of it's mission to also create a decent forum location for W66...., but I'm not sure...

In fact, I see two possible developments:

* Either IB will create a new forum structure for and inside World66, thus implementing comparable (??) pages as in Wikitravel. Wikitravel and W66 each having their own structures * Or there will be kind of a common [Wikitravel-World66] forum/discussion structure within CR. Wikitrtavel and W66 both having comparable structures within CR.

I think this issue is beyond CR's autonomy to decide and should be brainstormed with IB, am I right?

Markup

The markup I have encountered so far is the one that we use to link to other sites like Wikitravel, W66, etc. I assumed there would be more to come.

As for moving stuff for general discussions, please keep in mind that the whole thing is already getting complicated for a Wikitravel user, with Wikitravel, shared and now crossroads. I imagine there would be something similar for a W66 user. Also, I guess that there will be a significant fraction of folks who will hang out only at Wikitravel, or only at crossroads and there will be a large fraction who will do both. Catering to all three groups will be an interesting challenge.

Mark-up

I think we want to provide a very WYSIWYG interface to keep the technology threshold low, but allow markup for advanced users who are more comfortable/used to it.
