Drive entire continent of South America

We're thinking of buying or hiring a car to drive all around South America (crazy, I know!) Has anyone driven the entire continent of South America? Can it be done? What can you tell us about going about purchasing or hiring a car, international border crossings, personal safety, road rules, drivers licence requirements etc etc?

Quite a generic question,
Quite a generic question, huh? I've never done the SA tour, but crossed the Brazil/Uruguay border (with a Brazilian car, passport and driving permit) at Chuy and it was pretty straightforward. But I've heard that at other crossings such as the Chile/Argentina border things can take a lot longer. Road conditions also vary A LOT, even within countries like Brazil. Renting a car is not cheap (in comparison with the US or Canada, for instance) and petrol is expensive in Brazil (and ridiculously cheap in Venezuela).
some sources
There are many sources online for this. I am considering doing a similar trip and here is what I found:

Good luck!
