Is Istanbul safe for tourists?

There was a terrorist attack yesterday (Sunday, July 27th) in a working-class, residential part of Istanbul. I have a few Turkish friends who say this is nothing to worry about, just normal internal conflict within the country that should not affect my trip there.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Can ya help me decide what to do?
I'm planning to leave in a few weeks to spend 7 days in Istanbul. I'm really excited to experience the culture and I've been looking forward to this trip for a while. I'm a pretty well traveled American, currently living in Germany, but all of my travels have been within North America, Central America and Western Europe.

Istanbul is safe
Would you travel to London? There are several fatal stabbings every single day in London, center of the world! If you do, then yes you should definitely travel to Turkey, much safer and Istanbul is an amazingly beautiful city.
Terrorist attacks can happen anywhere these days.
Is Istanbul safe?
As in any major city there are ofcourse neighbourhoods you dont wanna go in to but other than that just relax. Youre gonna have a blast :-) Im turkish - we always tell the truth, even when we lie ;-)
