I did this to go to sonar music festival last year in barcelona. Toll road are expensive, although, if you take a tent there are some good places to save money on accomodation by sleeping in the toll road picnic areas. i would say do this on non toll roads but its a bit dodgy. good luck and let me know how you get on.

You should ideally look at starting your trip south of france from say Nice, and then onward to Italy...you can look at driving towards Sant Agata or Maranello, there are some incredible vista's from the alps on that side of italy anf if you are taking a camper, there are loads of camping sites as well, but check the season, summers see the sites fill up easy...This is not tested and is only based on info i have collected, i am plannin to go in september
